Hockey exercises are extremely important to anyone’s hockey career. It’s no secret that strong forearms and wrist flexors will have a profound effect on a hockey player’s game with more powerful shots, more stick speed, and better stick control. Therefore, one must focus on very powerful transverse abdominal exercises and overall power compound training. Because ice hockey requires a significant degree of physical strength, an ice hockey training plan should develop a combination of aerobic power, strength and muscle bulk, explosive speed and power, as well as good anaerobic endurance.

Unlike bodybuilding, where the only aim is to increase the size and appearance of muscles, strength training programs for sport ultimately must develop either explosive power or muscular endurance. Here, now, are examples of exercises that should be included in an ice hockey strength training program.
Variations on the standard circuit training routines are often employed by ice hockey players seeking greater overall upper body strength. Chest exercises such as the bench press and the inclined press, shoulder presses, as well as dip and chin-up exercises, are usually a part of such a program. Bench presses are a great overall upper body exercise for the chest, shoulders, and triceps. Woodchoppers are an excellent way to develop core strength and upper body stability, and will raise your slap or wrist shot power.
On the other hand, pure arm strength, while useful to the ice hockey player, particularly in the delivery of a hard shot, as well as being able to battle for position in front of the goal, or along the boards of the playing surface, is less important than the development of a solid, balanced upper body. For instance, squats develop overall lower body strength needed for body checking, as well as speed and strength in front of the net. Dead lifts work on entire body strength, but focus on the lower back, grip strength, and legs.
Again, sport-specific strength training programs are fundamental to an athlete’s development and success.

hi im a hockey goalie and im currently working on off ice training in order to prepare for next season. my goalie coach said to practice getting up with 2 legs at the same time.. if i practice this drill is it like mimicking how to get up with both legs on ice? just because i wont be getting much ice time in the summer.. if this is not good for getting up with 2 legs at the same time do u have any other suggestions?
